A new drink is being launched on St David’s Day to rival famous Scottish and Irish brands, more than 100 years after whisky-making ended in Wales.

Small independent firm the Welsh Whisky Company, based in the Brecon Beacons, is launching Penderyn single malt into a multi-million pound market dominated by drinks from Scotland and Ireland.
Wales once had a vibrant whisky industry which declined during the Welsh religious revival and temperance movement of the 19th Century.
The last commercial distillery, at Bala, north Wales, closed at the end of the 1800s.
But the tradition is being revived with the launch of the malt on Wales’ national day - 1 March.

The number of women joining Scotland’s premier whisky connoisseurs’ club is increasing at an unprecedented rate. Over the past three years, women have accounted for one in four of all new memberships at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. That compares with just one in 10 in previous years.
Experts say the rise has been prompted by a new generation of female drinkers prepared to experiment with new spirits and different flavours as well as a series of tasting events that combine whisky with food.
The new generation of young, professional female whisky drinkers were also introducing their friends, colleagues and clients to the spirit, Griffiths said. “They like to try new things, like to sit down and nose whisky and taste it, and they are not afraid of saying whether they like it or not.”

A 157-year-old whisky has sold for more than 29,000 pounds (about $67,000), setting what is thought to be a world record auction price for a bottle of Scotch.
The Bowmore single malt, which was bottled in 1850, was sold at McTear’s auctioneers in Glasgow for 29,400 pounds to an anonymous telephone bidder, beating the distillery itself.
… The whisky, which was was sold on behalf of a private owner, is the oldest known bottle of Bowmore in existence.
… Bowmore’s brand director Glen Moore said they had planned to bring the bottle back to the distillery to take pride of place in its new visitor centre on the island of Islay, off Scotland’s west coast. “We bid beyond the value limit we had set ourselves, but unfortunately, the winning bidder went beyond that,” he said.

LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. — To Wild Turkey master distiller Jimmy Russell, the piercing sounds of a warehouse rising in the Kentucky countryside are the sounds of prosperity.
“As long as you see work going on — and the construction, and increasing your size — you know your business is doing well,” said Mr. Russell, who started working for the bourbon maker in 1954.
Distillers are expanding their bourbon production and storage and dispatching sales teams around the world, bullish for a traditionally Southern beverage gaining popularity worldwide. Surging exports, the weak U.S. dollar and rising popularity among younger Americans are driving the boom.
