EUAN Shand, the entrepreneur behind Scotland’s first carbon-neutral distillery, is aiming to revolutionise the way we think about the origin of whisky with an ambitious plan to introduce the French concept of terroir into the production process.

Shand, who is spending nearly £3.5m on a distillery in Huntly near Aberdeen, says only barley from local farmers will be used for his new blend.

Red Letter Whisky … Wow !

Wiser’s Red Letter Whisky is a very limited edition super-premium whisky being introduced across Canada in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Wiser’s Whisky. Modeled after J.P. Wiser’s original Red Letter Rye

What a special Whisky !

Most of you, like I would suggest “it better be, at $150 a bottle.”, and maybe you can justify the price as $1 per year.

Well, you will not be dissappointed.  To the nose, I find it the most robust Canadian Whisky.  The taste is full and belongs on the top shelf for any true whisky lover.

Do yourself a favour, and buy a limited bottle, or split one 3 ways, or better yet, allow a good friend to “rush out” to the nearest LCBO and purchase one, before inviting you by for a good ‘pour’ (thanks CP)

cheers to J.P.Wiser

Whisky boss fights overseas bottling ban

Posted on October 16th, 2007 by Angus.
Categories: Scotch, Whisky News.

WHISKY boss Brian Megson has attacked the industry’s trade association over plans to ban distillers from sending single malt Scotch overseas to be bottled.

Megson, a former board member of the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), has hired a law firm and lobbyists to oppose the SWA’s crackdown on behalf of Angus Dundee Distillers, the company which he now runs.

“It is the thin end of the wedge. If this was to happen, the next step would be easier. “Bottling overseas is completely legal and we have been doing it for over 100 years. Our partners would not be happy if we were prevented from doing that.”

LCBO launches “Whisky in Focus” promotion as sales on the rise

Posted on October 16th, 2007 by quint.

TORONTO, Oct. 16 /CNW/ - The LCBO is today launching Whisky in Focus, its
largest-ever whisky promotion, as sales of the popular spirit are projected to
top $520 million by year-end - more than $16 million higher than last year.
“Whisky is re-emerging as the preferred spirits drink for many
Ontarians,” says Michael Riley, Business Unit Director, Spirits Category, who
is chief whisky buyer for the LCBO. “In fact, sales of Canadian whisky alone,
which were in serious decline just over a decade ago, are now growing at a
rate of four to five per cent a year. The main reason is consumers are
rediscovering whisky’s unique and distinctive characteristics.”
In addition to presenting 99 featured whiskies and more than 1,000
tastings in all 602 LCBO stores until November 10, Whisky in Focus has a
creative twist. It includes a photo competition which invites entrants to
submit photos that reflect the essence of whisky based on supplied themes. The
themes are individuality, iconic, heritage, spirit and enduring. Contest
details are available at www.lcbo.com….

…”Whisky producers are reinventing the way they present their products and
driving sales growth as a result,” says Riley, noting premium whiskies are
growing by 8.1% per cent versus last year. “The new Crown Royal Cask No. 16,
Forty Creek Small Batch Reserve and J.P Wiser’s Red Letter Whisky are good
examples of Canadian whisky’s new, more contemporary look.”

The ‘Holy Grail’ of Canadian Whisky Awards 2007

As determined by the ‘Best of Whisky’ Panel

GOLD           Canadian Club ‘Limited Reserve’ 20 year

SILVER        Forty Creek ‘Barrel Select’

BRONZE   Forty Creek ‘Small Batch Reserve’

The separation of points between Gold and Silver and Bronze was very slight; so we might suggest the following: TRY.. THEM .. ALL !! ..

Our  Gold Place honour goes to CC20. This is very hard to find (mostly sold to the Japanese Market) but every once in a while this wonderful whisky becomes available elsewhere and if you see it, buy it or call us. Canadian Club is one of the most recognized names in the business but this rarity is purely the Top of the Class.

Our  Silver Place honour goes to ‘Forty Creek’ Barrel Select from a whisky maker who is winning numerous awards & accolades worldwide. The best news is that it is typically available and a moderately inexpensive elixir. Notes from Whisky Guru’ Michael Jackson said, “It is the richest-tasting Canadian whisky I have tasted” (whisky mag. iss#20). If you haven’t yet tried this whisky, give it a try and you’ll more than likely join the growing list of converts.

Our  Bronze Place honour goes to a soon to be available (albeit in limited quantity) whisky… The Forty Creek distillery will soon release this rare gem. It is sure to give you an indulgence of luxury. Only 6000 bottles of this Limited ‘small batch’ is available, so don’t delay if you happen to sight one. This is an ‘Especially Smooth’ and ‘Fully Complex’ whisky.

Note: 35 Canadian Whiskies were sampled by our panel and we did not include any single malt barley offerings (Glen Breton Rare), since this should be considered a separate category. The 4 panel judges narrowed choices to the Top 6. For the finals, we tasted blind. Each judges gave a score per sample and the original previous tasting average was given a vote (therefore 5 scores per sample) and the results are as noted above.
