Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, (LVMH), has unveiled a new look for its Glenmorangie single malt Scotch whisky. Starting next month, the brand, distilled in the Highland town of Tain, will be packaged in an ultra-modern, curvy bottle featuring the “Signet,” inspired by ancient artwork on a Pictish stone.
“We believe the stylish, contemporary look will appeal to a much wider audience at a time when more and more people are opening their eyes to the world of malt whisky,” said Paul Neep, Glenmorangie’s Chief Executive.
Glenmorangie is one of the world’s top five single malt brands, with annual sales of around 300,000 cases. However, it has a relatively low profile in the U.S. market, where it sells approximately 35,000 cases per year and has a category share of less than 5%. LVMH, which acquired the brand in 2005 (when it bought the majority stake from the Macdonald family), is hoping the redesign will help change that.

Bowmore: Morrison Bowmore, owner of the Bowmore Distillery on Islay, the Lowland Distillery Auchentoshan at Dumbarton and Highland distillery Glen Garioch are cheering a sharp rise in profitability after shifting its focus from low-margin blended whisky to single malts. The Glasgow-based firm, taken over by Suntory of Japan in 1994, made a profit before tax of £2.6 million in the year to 31 December, 2006, against just £154,000 in 2005. The directors said: ‘The improvement in profitability is down to the company’s focus on moving away from low-margin blend business and concentrating on our single malt brands. This is reflected in the performance of Bowmore, whose sales in 2006 continued to grow.’

We stumbled upon this article on Rye Whisk(e)y. I’m not sure I can agree with some of the claims, but there are some interesting historical facts included
We’ve covered Whiskey before, but Whiskey is the most complicated of the spirit categories, since within it there are several different types, and often a little bit of confusion ensues….
….One of the biggest problems I encounter with rye is that far too many people confuse it with Canadian whiskey. To understand this situation, you need to understand the history of rye whiskey in America….
…This mindset of switching out American rye whiskey for Canadian whisky was so prevalent, that to this day you will still find many cocktail recipe books specifying Canadian whisky as the ingredient to use in cocktails which should actually be made with American whiskey….
