LOUISVILLE, Ky. — There’s something very James Bond about arriving at your hotel room to find a mysterious package waiting for you on the bed.
It helps to be staying in a 100-year-old luxury hotel that Al Capone and nine U.S. presidents have all slept in. That writer F. Scott Fitzgerald so adored, he used as an inspiration for scenes in “The Great Gatsby.”
Oh yes, the mysterious black paper bag is very 007.

THE Scotch Whisky Association is preparing to go back to court in Canada to challenge the use of the word “Glen” in a locally produced single malt, arguing if allowed it might confuse drinkers into thinking they’re sipping Scotch.

I can’t believe the stuffy association is continuing this nonsense. I hope this only enhances Glen Breton with the added press.

Ahh, St. Patrick’s Day.
The day when everyone’s a wee bit Irish and at least a little drunk.
To make sure we do it right this year, I talked to a Shannon O’Doherty, owner of O’Doherty’s Irish Grille in downtown Spokane, and an O’Doherty’s bartender to get the goods on some green drinkin’.
“What’s the first word in Ireland?” O’Doherty asked me before answering himself: “Guinness.”
See, you take some variation of Guinness, Irish whiskey or both, he said, and mix it with something, and you have an Irish cocktail.
“And maybe some coffee,” he said.
Why so undiscerning, Mr. O’Doherty? I asked.
“What’s a seven-course meal in Ireland?” O’Doherty asked. “A six-pack and a potato.”
OK, but give it to us straight, man. There must be something besides jokes rattling around up there.
“These are the two biggies,” he said, placing bottles of Jameson and Bushmills Irish whiskey on the bar. “Ignore all the others.”

from The Japan Times Online…
LONDON (Kyodo) When delegates at a whisky fair in Paris prepared to meet the author of an exhaustive study of Scotland’s distilleries, they expected to be greeted by a mature Scotsman. Imagine their surprise, then, when they learned the writer was Misako Udo, who originally hails from Nagasaki Prefecture.
Indeed, many Scots have been surprised that a woman, let alone one from Japan, was capable of producing “The Scottish Whisky Distilleries” — a 610-page guide to more than 700 distilleries.
