MOUNT VERNON, Va. — The lines at the gift shop at George Washington’s home may soon be getting a little longer.
Virginia’s governor is expected to approve a measure that would allow whiskey to be sold at Mount Vernon.
A spokesman for Gov. Timothy Kaine said under the plan, the estate could sell small amounts of the founding father’s own brand of rye whiskey.
Historians say Washington was the nation’s largest producer of whiskey in 1799 and had a state-of-the-art distillery. However, the distillery fell into disrepair after Washington’s death.

A new whisky distillery is being proposed for the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island in Canada to distill single malt whisky. The former UBC university farm site is the proposed home for the innovative business. The plan is to be opened in spring of 2007 and the new distillery will be called the Shelter Point Distillery. The Comox Valley was chosen because of good water and locally available land on which to grow barley on the 700-hectare farm.
Shelter Point’s whisky production will be less than 50,000 litres about 65,000 typical bottles. It will be a small run compared to Scottish distilleries, which can produce up to one million litres per year. A special international blend of the whisky will be ready just in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

note…. to see all updates related to this years Malt Monk journey, read the special malt monk ponders page..
Although the ‘malt monk’ is currently proceeding with blind tastings; to add to the scoring mix, our panel will be meeting each month to taste a cross-section grouping of Canadian Whiskies. This is a slight but enhanced change from our original format. We will have each tasting ‘faction’ (ie: malt monk’s blind tasting and our tasting panel’s findings) compile a top 10 list. Both top ten lists will be combined for an overall ‘prime’ list and then all will get together for the final tasting to determine our ‘holy grail’ of Canadian Whisky. Note: the whiskies are being tasted straight from the bottle to glass with no water added.
We have the first group of ‘tastings’ completed and although it is far too early to make any declarations we would like to submit a few remarks. Our panel has a keen eye on two from our ‘group A’ and we would like to recommend them for our readers. These noted stand-outs are: Forty Creek ‘Three Grain’ and Canadian Club ‘Sherry Cask’. Take note also that these two are not always available but if you find they are accessible to you, we suggest you grab one in each hand and enjoy.

IT IS one of the world’s most famous single malt whiskies.
But the Macallan is now being trialled as a liqueur in the United States - complete with ingredients such as maple and pecan - in a bid to appeal to upmarket women drinkers.
TThe new drink, called Amber, is being test marketed across Washington, Denver and Seattle after small-scale trials in Boston. It is the first time Macallan has built a liqueur around its malt, which has achieved global renown since its launch 183 years ago………
…………..
Michael Jackson, a whisky writer, said it was a mistake to tamper with Macallan.
“It is madness to do this. It is like putting go-faster stripes down the side of a Rolls-Royce.
“If you are going to do something like this, Macallan is not the whisky to use. It sounds like a bit of an alcopop,” he said………..
